70 years ago in 1953 in St. Louis, Missouri, a legend was born. This year, Chevy is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Corvette with the release of a revolutionary new model. 1956-1957:
On May 1, 1956, Karl Ludvigsen of Sports Car Illustrated, began his review of the latest ‘56 Corvette model, writing, “Chances are that by the time you read this the ’56 Corvette will have made a profound impression on the whole sports car world,” and he was absolutely right. After a rocky three years of production, the 1956 Corvette would set the standard for American Sports cars.
1963 – 1967:
Featuring a completely new design, 1963 introduced the first-ever Stingray model, one of the most highly sought after Corvettes today, in large part due to the split-rear windshield. This was also the first iteration of a Corvette to boast high wheel wells, setting the stage for the next generation of Corvettes.
1968-1982:
When you picture a Corvette, there is a good chance you’re picturing one of these models. Unlike Gen II Corvettes, these years upgraded to the high-curved wheel wells the Corvette is famous for.
1983-2004:
While designs slowly shifted from the hard-to-soft edges between the 1980 and 1990s Corvette models, two things remained consistent — low wheel wells and ever-growing speed. These models mechanically evolved each year and are famous for their insanely fast engines.
2005-2017:
Wheel wells rose and once again set the stage for the following generation of Corvettes.
2019-Present:
Going 0-60 MPH in 2.9-seconds, today’s models are Corvettes like we’ve never seen before. The newest iterations feature sharp edges and a style that can only be described as “vicious.”
2023:
Possibly the most gorgeous model to-date, the Corvette’s 70th Anniversary will introduce the 2023 Corvette Stingray and the all-new, first-ever retail-available mid-engine Corvette Z06. Powered by a 6.2L LT2 rear-engine, the 2023 Corvette is reaching new heights, producing 495 maximum horsepower, allowing the corvette to hit up to 194 MPH off the lot. General Motors President, Mark Reuss, released a statement on his LinkedIn stating, “[Chevrolet] will offer an electrified and a fully electric, Ultium-based Corvette in the future”. Reuss also announced Chevy’s plans to make EVs more efficient, using the natural heat generated by the batteries to warm up the interior, enhance charging conditions, and improve acceleration, and increase the vehicle’s range by approximately 10%.
